Dortmund proved too hard to crack for Union Berlin’s Taiwo Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi fired blanks as Union Berlin returned from their trip to the Signal Iduna Park with a 4-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund in their Bundesliga matchday five clash on Sunday.

Awoniyi had breached the defences of Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, and Borussia M’gladbach in an excellent start to his permanent stay with Union Berlin.

But he couldn’t add to his haul when the Iron Ones were held to a goalless draw by Augsburg last weekend. And the Nigerian forward, hard as he tried for the best part of an hour, could not get the better of the home side’s defenders.

And Urs Fischer’s men were already trailing three-nil by the time Awoniyi was replaced by Kevin Behrens in the 56th minute.

Behrens won a penalty for the visitors moments after his introduction. Max Kruse converted the spot-kick expertly, and a comeback appeared on the cards when Voglsammer made it 3-2 with ten minutes left of play.

But in-demand Norwegian forward Erling Haaland smashed in Dortmund’s fourth – his second of the afternoon – to condemn Union Berlin to their first league defeat of the campaign.

It’s been a forgettable week for Union Berlin after they tasted their first loss in all competitions at the Sinobo Stadium in Prague, where Slavia Prague ran away with a 3-1 triumph in a Europa League gameweek one encounter.
