Jackpot joy for Downend neighbours

EIGHT neighbours in a Downend street have won a lottery jackpot totalling £270,000 (152 million).

The residents of Chesterfield Road won between £30,000 and £60,000 in the People's Postcode Lottery.

The winners included Ellie Hinton and husband Cameron, who both work at Southmead Hospital's maternity ward.

The couple had a baby daughter earlier this year after IVF treatment and said they could use some of the prize to fund further treatment if they needed it when thinking of having another child.

Ellie and Cameron met on the maternity ward eight years ago when working together as a midwife and an obstetrician, delivering babies on Christmas Day.

They had support from their parents to fund the IVF treatment through which seven-month-old Harriet was conceived.

Ellie said: “The money means the world to us, as we know it’s there if we need to fund further IVF.”

They may also spend the money on an extension to their house.

The postcode BS16 5RH was announced as a winner with the lottery on August 29. It was good news for the players on one side of the street – but any players on the other side, which has a different postcode, will have missed out.

Seven neighbours won £30,000 each, with eighth player Cath Evans winning £60,000 because she bought two tickets.

Mum-of-two Cath intends to use some of the winnings for house renovations.

She said: "We’re putting plans through to do a loft extension and an extension on the back of our house, so that will come in super handy.

“We can have a really posh kitchen now, rather than your basic one!”

Teacher Heather Van Dort plans to use some of the money to fund a family reunion in Australia.

She said: “My brother and nephew live in Perth and I haven’t seen them for five years and neither have my mum and dad.”

Frank Gallagher and wife Sue said it felt like a dream to win. They plan to give "something extra special" to their grandchildren, and might also put money towards a holiday mobile home.

The youngest winner was 21-year-old Gabby Dowding, who found out about her win inside her car while on her break at work.

Gabby has been starting to save to buy a place of her own and said: "It’ll make a huge difference because I was looking to rent and just try and save up for a deposit.

“I’m so happy that I can now go and get my own place.

“I’m sure I’ll go shopping with my mum and I’ll be getting the champagne out tonight for definite, I’ll get the rosé Prosecco out too.”

Other winners from the street chose to remain anonymous.

The winners found out about their good fortune via video calls with People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador and broadcaster Judie McCourt, who said: “I was so pleased to bring this incredible surprise to some of our lucky winners in Downend – I couldn’t be happier for them!"

Each day in August one postcode nationally was announced as a £30,000 prize winner, with every players in that postcode winning £30,000 for every ticket they hold.

People’s Postcode Lottery costs £10 a month to play.

A minimum of 33% of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have helped raise over £750 million to date for thousands of good causes, across Britain and internationally.
