EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd set Paul Pogba contract deadline as prospect of free transfer looms

Manchester United want Paul Pogba’s future sorted out by Christmas.

The World Cup-winning Frenchman is out of contract next summer, which means his agent Mino Raiola is free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January 1.

That puts Pogba, who is certain to be in demand on a free transfer next summer, in a strong position, but United will at least know whether or not they should try to sell him in January if the festive season passes without any agreement to extend in place.

United are determined to hold on to Pogba and have offered him around £400,000 a week.

There is still a confidence within United that he will commit his future, too, although negotiations with Raiola are always complex.

Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have all registered an interest in signing the Frenchman.

The 28-year-old has started the season in fine form for United with seven assists in eight appearances in all competitions, and they want his future resolved before the turn of the year to avoid his situation becoming a distraction for boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian reserved special praise for Pogba last month while emphasising how important he is to his plans.

"We've seen that Paul wants to contribute," Solskjaer said after the 1-1 draw with Southampton, during which Pogba contributed an assist.

"Of course you [reporters] don't see him in the dressing room or in training, but he's really determined and he shows his winning mentality and I'm very impressed with him."
