Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland should give serious consideration to joining Liverpool rather than Premier League rivals Manchester City next summer, former Anfield hero John Arne Riise told Goal.com.
Is there a club in world football that Haaland would not improve?
If Pep Guardiola could call on a centre-forward of his ilk, it is hard to imagine that Manchester City would not have made their dominance count during the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and the topsy-turvy draw with title-rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Some 35 miles down the M62, Liverpool have largely avoided the temptation to splash out on new signings during the COVID pandemic; Ibrahima Konate the only new face to arrive at Anfield this summer.
But if the reports are true and Haaland really does have a £68 million release clause in his contract – one that will become active next summer – then Liverpool surely have an obligation to throw their hat into the ring for a man well on his way to becoming the greatest goal-scoring talent of his generation.
“Obviously I would love to have him at Liverpool, because he’s an unbelievable player,” said Riise, the 2005 Champions League winner and 110-capped Norway international.
“He’s in great form, and I think he would suit Klopp’s style of football. I also think he would love Liverpool as a club. But if City got him, wow! You talk about unbeatable teams, then that would be close!
“Whoever gets Haaland, whether it’s next season or whatever, is going to be an unbelievably strong team for many years to come.
“I don’t know if Liverpool have the chance to sign him, but if they do then please do, because that would be unbelievable for the club – or for any club that signs him!”
Speaking last month, Bundesliga legend Stefan Effenberg insisted that the bullish, boisterous, one-man battering ram that is Erling Haaland would suit Liverpool down to the ground, pointing out that he’d give Klopp’s twinkle-toed front line a completely new dimension.
