‘It’s turning into a joke’ – Gabby Agbonlahor urges Manchester United to sell Donny van de Beek amid

Gabby Agbonlahor says Donny van de Beek’s situation at Old Trafford is ‘turning into a joke’ and has urged Manchester United to sell him in January, as he continues to be linked with Premier League rivals Everton.

Van de Beek spent five successful seasons in Ajax’s first-team – helping the Dutch club win the Eredivisie title and reach the Europa League final – before completing a £40m move to the Theatre of Dreams in the summer of 2020.

Much was expected of the Netherlands international but he has endured a difficult spell at Manchester United, failing to cement a regular place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.

Van de Beek is yet to start a league game this season and reacted angrily after being an unused substitute in United’s last Champions League game.

Former Premier League star Agbonlahor says there is no point ‘trapping’ Van de Beek at Manchester United and has urged the Red Devils to reach an agreement with Everton in January.

This week, Everton director of football Marcel Brands confirmed he tried to sign Van de Beek last summer and refused to rule out a January move for his compatriot.

Asked whether he thinks Man United will let Van de Beek leave in January, Agbonlahor told Football Insider: ‘I think they will.

‘It’s turning into a joke now. United need to just let him go and play football. You’re trapping him at the club and not giving him any minutes.

‘With the performances of Fred and [Scott] McTominay, Van de Beek deserves a chance to show what he can do.

‘Manchester United United need to let him go in January and play some football. The kid just wants to play football.

‘He needs a run of games. Not just the occasional 60 minutes. Give him a run of games.’

Revealing Everton’s interest in Van de Beek, club chief Brands said this week: ‘We had him on our list. At the beginning of the transfer window, we enquired at Manchester United, then it was impossible.

‘At the end of the window, I received a call from Guido Albers, his agent, that he might be rented out after all. But at the last minute it was cancelled. Stopped again.’

Asked whether a January move for Van de Beek could be on the cards, Brands added: ‘It always depends on whether a club want to cooperate.

‘And it is early October, so much can still happen with injuries. Manchester United are playing on various fronts, it’s hard to say now.

‘It is of course a pity for Donny. He is a very good player, no doubt about it. Such a boy wants to play and wants to return to the Dutch national team.

‘But you know that at such a club the pressure is great and the competition is huge. When you see what United had sitting on the bench: Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Paul Pogba.’
