A Manchester City fan is fighting for his life in hospital after being viciously attacked by rival supporters in a car park in Belgium.

Guido De Pauw, 63, was 'left for dead' after he tried to retrieve his scarf from a Club Brugge fan at a service station in Drongen.

The attack took place following Man City's 5-1 victory over Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mr De Pauw, a member of the Blue Moon Belgium supporters club, was making his way home when he stopped at the service station.

He was approached by a rival supporter and had his scarf pulled from his neck.

When Mr De Pauw, who lives in the town of Ninove near Brussels, tried to get it back it's thought he was hit to the back of the head.

His son Jurgen, co-chairman of the supporters club, told the Manchester Evening News his dad went to several City matches a season and had followed his beloved Blues all over Europe in recent years.

He added: " Unfortunately he is in a bad condition in hospital right now.

"We don't have a lot of information. I was already at home when it happened, he was driving back in a second car when they stopped at a service station.

"His friends said they saw him trying to get his scarf back then the next time they saw him he was on the ground unconscious.

"It's terrible. If he had stayed inside or hadn't been running to get his scarf back he would still be here with us now.

"But unfortunately he was hit to the back of the head.

"He was left on the floor like a dog in a parking lot.

"He is in a coma in a critical condition right now. We are going to see the doctors again this morning.

"But we have to stay hopeful that he will come out of it and that this wasn't his last City game."
