Sex trends of 2022 predicted from 'pegging' to 'outercourse' and 'heteroflexibility'
14/01/2022 11:42:12

It’s a brand new year and alongside new fashions and slang our sex lives are bound to follow new trends as well.

And, while nobody can fully predict the future, sex experts are predicting what sex will look like in 2022.

Whether it’s influenced by the pandemic and social distancing or a greater acceptance of fluidity we’re curious about what’s coming next.

Looking ahead, what can we expect for the sexual wellness space in 2022?

From outercourse to discovering different sex toys and bringing it back to basics, sexual wellness brand LELO and its sex and relationship expert Kate Moyle shared their predictions for the new year ahead.

Check them out below:

Outercourse

For many people, life at a distance is becoming the norm and outercourse is an ever so increasingly popular idea. Engaging in sexual activity but without intercourse means different things to different people.

Be it everything except penetration, or just dry humping, a massage, perhaps even mutual masturbation - outercourse is presenting itself as a safe sex alternative as it clearly establishes boundaries and encourages better communication for intimacy and pleasure.

Whatever your definition of it depends on your reasons for trying it, and because of this, it may just prove to be the best new trend of them all.

Heteroflexibility

If the last two years have taught us anything, it is that life is pretty uncertain and it is our right to focus on our desires. Understanding female desire and orgasm are a growing phenomena.

Our understanding of sexuality is evolving – an important part of a personal relationship with one’s own sensuality and pleasure is to explore various aspects of your sex life. So, if you indentify as “mostly straight”, but occasionally find yourself attracted to the same gender, romantically or sexually or both, embrace it.

Sexualiy exists on a spectrum and while some people believe labels aren’t helpful, for others they really can be. Every heteroflexible person is different, and their experiences may look different. What they do have in common is that they help you to make sense of yourself, which is precious and worth exploring.

Anal toys

Now that anal play and pleasure have become more common than ever before, it is time to take it up a notch and talk about anal toys. Surely, anal toys are nothing new, but we rarely hear about butt plugs outside their bedroom, people who enjoy rimming, or straight people who enjoy being pegged.

With the sex toy space making strides, it’s time to break yet another taboo and start enjoying the bum fully! Anal toys could be the extra addition to your everyday sex life that you never knew you needed!

Remember that lube is non-optional, pacing yourself adds to the comfort and the erotic intensity, and any toy used for anal must have a flared base and be cleaned or covered with a condom before going into any other orifices.

Pegging

And now for something completely… well similar. Pegging is penetrating someone using a strap-on, typically a combination of a harness and a dildo. It can also be done with a harness-free dildo, or it can be done with a handheld vibrator, like a prostate massager.

Pegging, the act of a person receiving anal sex from someone usually wearing a strap-on dildo has been gaining currency in sexual circles for years.

But now, it seems like the secret’s out, 2022 might be the year the wave breaks and pegging makes it into bedrooms, in the same way that the prostate massage did way back in 2016.

Back to basics

There’s never been a better time in history to have a clitoris than 2021. And, this is again true in 2022. We know and love the Sensonic technology or suction toys, but what about making direct contact with the clitoris?

Even though it has been the subject of much scrutiny and confusion ever since we got reacquainted with it, what we undoubtedly know is that the clitoris typically loves to be stimulated with a variety of rhythms.

Instead of just rubbing up on the clit, consider using rotating motions that imitate the light finger touch, and provide precise stimulation and light pressure on the clitoral hood.

After all, the natural circular motion of a fingertip is hard to beat, as well as all those fancy moves that may have been forgotten (kneading, pinching, swirling, stroking, tapping on and around it) - it is time to go back to basics.

Sex and relationship expert for LELO UK Kate Moyle comments: “These trends demonstrate a shift in attitude to being more flexible and open-minded when it comes to our sex lives, and we see this reflected in the normalising of sexual acts, desires and attitudes which were previously unspoken about or hidden.

"This approach to sexual wellness being included and recognised as a part of our overall health and wellbeing finally is here to stay, and we should expect it to be the foundation from which all future sex trends are stemming from.”
